3.0 ECONOMIC SECTOR

        3.1 Agriculture

Forty five point forty nine percent 45.49 % or 8,446 hectares of the total land area of the City is devoted to agriculture.

The City produces different kinds of vegetables which accumulate to 300 metric tons a year. Such vegetables are pechay, eggplant, carrot, cauliflower, radish, cabbage and many others. Onion grower produces a total of 24 metric tons a year.

Post harvest facilities in the City that provided a big boost to agricultural development are as follows; warehouses, rice mills, hand tractors, threshers, solar driers, mechanical driers, kiskisan and IRR pumps.

        A. Livestock and poultry

These are the alternate means of livelihood that the people of Gapan mostly depended on. These helped them to augment their daily cost of living. The City has a bigger edge over the neighboring Cities and Municipalities in terms of livestock and poultry whether it is backyard or commercial. The City has a total of 17 large scale Poultry and Piggery located at Barangay Maburak, Mabuga, Puting Tubig, Makabaklay, Bungo, Pambuan, Sta Cruz and Kapalangan.

        B. Fish production

Gapan produces metric tons of different kinds of inland fishes such as hito, tilapia and bulig. The City Government has a program of encouragement for the fish producers to double the production per harvest by introducing to them new techniques and the most modern ways on how to be productive in culturing inland fishes.

        C. Wet Market

Gapan has the most improved wet market and slaughter house in the 4th district of Nueva Ecija.

Meat and fish inspectors under the office of the City Treasurer are always vigilant in routine inspections to keep the buying populace safe and free from any harmful diseases.

        D. Cooperatives and NGOs Organization

A number of cooperatives, civic, religious and non- government organization sprouting in the city has only one goal in common, to serve and give assistance to the people in the field of nutrition, health, sanitation and especially in the field of food production.
